Snoop Dogg singt auf Deutsch!

A friend sent me this short video of Snoop Dogg singing “Schön ist es auf der Welt zu sein” by German singer Roy Black in a commercial for a German phone company (read below if you want to know more about the history of the song and the singer):

Roy Black, born as Gerhard Höllerich, was a famous “Schlager” (pop) singer and TV actor in postwar Germany, who died in 1991. (Black was a white man, while another famous singer in the German “Schlager” genre, Roberto Blanco, is black.) Here is Roy Black performing the song that Snoop Dogg covers in the commercial (you have to wait for the refrain):

Gundolf Graml is Associate Prof. and Dir. of German Studies at Agnes Scott College. He has a Ph.D. in German Studies from the University of Minnesota and has published articles on German and Austrian film and tourism.
