Our event “From Istanbul to Berlin: 50 Years of Turkish Migration to Germany” drew a large crowd last night. Teasley Lecture Hall was filled to capacity when historian Dr. Rita Chin and German-Turkish author Yade Kara presented on the topic of Turks in Germany. Dr. Chin focused on the historical development of the situation of so-called guest workers in Germany, embedding this history into a longer view of how Germans’ attitudes towards race have developed since 1945. Yade Kara, who was born in Turkey but grew up in Westberlin before the fall of the Berlin Wall, presented a more personal experience of what it meant to be cast as the cultural outsider in a rather homogenous German society.
