Oxymoron, Tasty

“Oxymoron, (from Greek ὀξύμωρον, “sharp dull”), a figure of speech that combines contradictory terms.”

After a long delay our arrival in Berlin appeared as a timed unpunctuality: A rather cool and rainy day was in its last quarter, any kind of sightseeing would have been a dreary affair, so we enjoyed the welcome dinner at the “Oxymoron” all the more. Hidden away in one of the courtyards of the famous Hackesche Höfe, Europe’s largest courtyard complex whose Jugendstil architecture once stood for the successful synthesis of residential, commercial, and artistic living, this restaurant is now well-frequented by locals and visitors alike. The great food is matched by the interior design, which almost feels like a living room. Exhausted and hungry, we enjoyed all of it. It might have turned into a long evening, but the sleepy looks of some of us–we’d been awake for more than 24 hours–signalled that it was finally time to go to bed…

Gundolf Graml is Associate Prof. and Dir. of German Studies at Agnes Scott College. He has a Ph.D. in German Studies from the University of Minnesota and has published articles on German and Austrian film and tourism. He is currently writing a book about tourism and Austrian national identity after 1945. Other research projects include critical whiteness studies and, most recently, investigations into the connection between memory and nature. At ASC, Gundolf Graml teaches courses on a broad range of topics, from German 101 to German and Austrian Cinema and Afro-German History and Culture.
